See Me contemplates how Black people respond to dynamics of (in)visibility while navigating the dehumanizing systems of racialized surveillance and gentrification. This series assesses the objectification of Black people, amplifying their agency by way of what the artist refers to as the “Black Gaze”. Rather than being reduced to bodies that are surveilled, consumed, and discarded, Mans’ figures look defiantly out onto the world – confronting, questioning, and challenging the viewer. The artist’s intentional use of monochrome throughout the series speaks to the question of Black erasure/ hypervisibility – examining how Blackness is constructed within power structures.
